Rio Rancho – Treat all your senses and come to the Rio Rancho Pork & Brew on Friday, and Saturday, March 17 and 18 at the Loma Colorado Complex and Blvd. The best barbeque in the state will be decided during the 2006 New Mexico Barbeque State Championships in a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned event. Barbequing teams from around the nation are expected to join local chefs for the weekend. Barbeque will be available for sale to the public as well, along with a host of other vendors and activities.

“Last year we had 53 participants,” said Art Perez, with the Rio Rancho Convention and Visitors Bureau, one of the sponsors. “This year, we’re looking for 60 or more.”

The fun begins on Friday at noon and continues until 9 pm; activities on Saturday run from 10 am to 6 pm.

Ninety KCBS-certified judges will judge the barbeque entries in four categories including a division for youth. And it’s not just barbeque but salsas, side dishes and other foods.

The main contest is Saturday with awards announced Saturday evening. The winning team will take home $2000, with $1000 to the runners up.

Along with the barbequing delights, there will be plenty of other activities including pig races, a carnival, other activities for children and adults and continuous entertainment. Sid Masters and the Swing Riders headline the entertainment for the event.
