Community artists and creative folk in high-country community of Mountainair are real busy these days as they put the finishing touches on new paintings, artworks, sculptures, baskets and quilts, write (or prepare to read or sing) new poetry, cut, paste, edit, layer, warp, distort, fold spindle and mutilate new digital art, paint the walls and ceilings and manicure the courtyard, trim the trees and bushes and make the beds at the old Shaffer hotel... or pick up trash in the Art Alley.

In fact just about everywhere you look around town, local creative folks are slaving away and preparing to put on the biggest arts shindig old Mountainair has ever seen.
Trust us. This is one arts weekend event you definitely don't want to miss.
This year is promising to be the biggest Arts Tour the town of Mountainair has ever seen and heard! On May 20th and 21st, dozens of visual artist will be showing their work and performing at galleries, studios and various other locations in the town as the Manzano Mountain Art Council presents its third annual Mountainair Arts Tour. This year the event is timed with the grand re-opening of the landmark Shaffer Hotel, built by Clem 'Pop' Shaffer in 1923. The theme of the tour is: Mountainair: Past to Present.
Visual Artists will be giving live demonstrations. Music, from classical to blue grass and light rock will be presented at three different venues. A program of the spoken word will be presented at the Shaffer Hotel garden. This year, there will be an entire gallery dedicated to just fiber art.
Linking in with the theme, there will be a public showing all weekend, of the famous Rancho Bonito, Pop Shaffer's ornately ornamented ranch, just outside of town. Two classic cars will be shuttling visitors back and forth between the community center and the ranch. Also in the plans is a classic car show. At the elementary school gymnasium, the Museum of New Mexico will present a program on book art and students from the school district will display their work.
