Luis Lopez – Beverly Hansen, Steppin’ Out’s cover artist for this issue, works out of her studio which she has named The Pink Pig Studio. It sits atop a mesa in this south-of-Socorro village where spectacular views of the valley offer her inspiration to paint the things she loves: Children, animals, flowers and New Mexico landscapes.
Beverly began painting about 20 years ago when her aunt Helen talked her into talking a local oil painting class in northern Wisconsin.
She has been painting ever since and, while she has no formal training, has taken painting classes from many different instructors including Joan White, a prominent artists from Lakewood, Wisc.
Since moving to Socorro some eight years ago, Beverly has been working with artist and teacher Midge Grace through New Mexico Tech’s community art classes. She has also studied with Jim Anderson and Rafael Chavez Mendez. Other influences include studying the works of children’s portrait artists Marcos Blahove and Joe Singer.
"We never stop learning," is one of Beverly’s quotes.
Much of Beverly’s work is from memory or from photos that she and her husband take on their travels.
Beverly has shown in Crandon and Lakewood, Wisc. Her work has also been exhibited in Los Alamos, Belen, Macey Center in Socorro; Isleta, Los Lunas and San Antonio. She currently is represented by Pentimento Art Gallery and Caffe Bar in San Antonio, among other places locally.
