April 1, 1950: Ralph Edwards & local folk enjoy T or C's new "welcome" sign

Truth or Consequences Fiesta is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the name change from Hot Springs, NM to Truth or Consequences, NM, after the game show of the 1950’s. Fiesta is a huge part of the town’s illustrious history. The theme of this year’s Fiesta is: Truth or Consequences Fiesta 2006: A Space Odyssey. This theme has been chosen due to the development of the Spaceport and the excitement generated by the X Prize Cup. Bringing such highly advanced technology and space commercialism to the deserts of New Mexico has caused many of us to contemplate how our daily lives will be affected. Therefore it seems only appropriate that we utilize the 2006 Truth or Consequences Fiesta to creatively celebrate and explore the many possibilities that this new space age may bring!

PARADE

Even after 56 years T or C is still celebrating... ;)
"Any excuse for a great party," they say! :p

The annual Fiesta Parade will take place Saturday, May 6th beginning at 10am in historic downtown T or C. Participants are invited to interpret their own space odyssey. Given Truth or Consequences’ wildly diverse history, current colorful population, and fertile creative landscape providing limitless future possibilities, this parade will surely rekindle the spirit that Ralph Edwards himself once ignited in town 57 years ago when he renamed the town after his game show. Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be given to the top three parade floats.

ENTERTAINMENT

Fiesta 2006: A Space Odyssey promises entertainment that’s out of this world! The weekend kicks off on Friday night May 5th with the Fiesta Follies. Beginning at 7pm at the Senior Recreation Center on Foch Street, experience the talent of T or C. The Audience Favorite will have the opportunity to perform on the Fiesta stage on Sunday, May 7th in Ralph Edwards Park.

After the parade on Saturday, meet us on the Rio Grande in Ralph Edwards Park to join in on the fun! The Deming Fusiliers kick of the music after the parade--playing energetic old time music from the barn dance and square dance tradition of the Appalachian Mountains. Next, Las Mariposas de dos Condados Folklorico Dancers (Junior Ballet Folklorica) bring to life the spirit and culture of Mexico’s rich and colorful past. The students of Arrey will present a traditional, colorful, artistic dance depiction consisting of folk dances from various regions of Mexico. The Junior Ballet Folklorica won the 2005 T or C Fiesta First Prize for the Best Parade Float.

Also after the parade, the Las Cruces Beach skate team "505 Skateboarding" returns to host a contest at the skate park in Ralph Edwards Park. The Beach will provide prizes for the winners as well as all participants. All local skateboarders can enter the contest the day of the event. Musical guests are T or C/Las Cruces folk/acid rock phenoms The Bends.

Saturday evening entertainment in Ralph Edwards Park begins at 7pm with the New World Drummers featuring Master West African Drummers & Dancers Male'Fainke of Mali & Kobiana Nakigan of Senegal, with T or C’s very own Middle Eastern dancer, Gracia, followed by Mystic Vision, the high-spirited and inspired group of reggae/hip-hop/R&B musicians from Tijeras, and horn-heavy Albuquerque ska sensations Danny Winn & the Earthlings.

FIESTA FUN

One of Fiesta’s classic traditions is the rodeo! Bring a little luck and lots of skill to the Sierra County Sheriff’s Posse Fiesta Rodeo, taking place May 6-7 and beginning at 2pm (both days) at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena. Events will include bareback, bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc, calf roping, ladies breakaway, barrel racing, and plenty of events for the kids. Presented by the Sierra County Sheriff’s Posse, the New Mexico Rodeo Association and Casper Baca Rodeo Co., this event is the NMRA Governor’s Tour and Casper Baca’s Great American Tour rolled into one exciting Fiesta Rodeo!

No horse? Then get on your hog and get ready for the 2nd Annual Truth or Consequences Fiesta Biker Rodeo. Come show off your motorcycle and your skill in the State National Bank parking lot after the parade on Saturday, May 6th. There will be prizes handed out to the winners of the slow race, keg push, hot dog on a string, and straight line events. There is a $5.00 entry fee.

Fiesta weekend will host many family-friendly activities. On Saturday, following the parade in Ralph Edwards Park there will be the Lions’ Club barbeque, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, arts and crafts booths and food vendors. Kids of all ages will have the ultimate interactive experience with a remote control racetrack, a rock climbing wall, a dunking tank, a water slip ‘n’ slide, an art cart, and a jumping balloon.

On Sunday, in Ralph Edwards Park, the festivities continue with Family Fun Day: kids’ fishing derby, horseshoes, the Lakeside Kiwanis Rubber Duck Race, junk boat races, volleyball tournament, and more.

How good is your salsa? Maybe you think your salsa is better than T or C’s Hacienda, La Pinata, Cuchillo Café, Sunset Grill or La Cocina? Well it’s time to put your money where your taste buds are and enter the Fiesta Salsa Competition. We’ll supply the chips, just meet us near the gazebo at Ralph Edwards Park on Sunday, May 7th at 1pm.

What can YOU do with Spam? You know, that wonderful, lovable, canned meat? This is your chance to be creative with your culinary skills. Make any dish you wish using that mystery meat known as Spam. Judging takes place near the gazebo at Ralph Edwards Park on Sunday, May 7th at 1pm.

The Geronimo Springs Museum will hold their annual Fiesta open house on Sunday, May 7th where there will be live music, arts and crafts demonstrations and taco bar. The museum will be open 11am-4pm. Admission is free.

Pre-Fiesta weekend activities

On Friday evening, April 28th, test you putting skills at the annual golf weekend Nuf Party at State National Bank; the Fiesta Golf Tournament takes place at the City Municipal Golf Course on April 29-30; on April 29th at beginning at the Sonic Drive-In, walk for Parkinson’s disease awareness in the APDA Truth or Consequences PDSG Walk-A-Thon, in memory of Ralph and Barbara Edwards.

The history of the Truth or Consequences Fiesta goes back to April 1, 1950. Ralph Edwards and his entire NBC production, acting and show crew came to rename “Hot Springs,” New Mexico “Truth or Consequences.” They aired the first live, coast-to-coast broadcast of the game show Truth or Consequences from the City of Truth or Consequences. The residents of Edwards’ adopted home are very pleased to say that he came back every year (until his health prevented him from traveling), with his Hollywood friends to celebrate the name change with a Fiesta, and to help spread the news about this oasis of hot springs. This year, in memory of Ralph Edwards who passed away this past December, the city of T or C proclaimed April 1st, this year and every year, to be Ralph Edwards Day.
