Nestled between the Sacramento and the San Andreas Mountain ranges in the Tularosa Valley is the city of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Alamogordo is the proud home of Holloman Air Force Base – Home of the F 117-A Stealth fighter plane a truly miraculous flying machine and as most New Mexicans know, it’s also the closest city to the White Sands National Monument. Once a year this fine community hosts a staple of the Southwest – The Cottonwood Festival. This year on Labor Day weekend Alamogordo will proudly present the 16th annual Festival in Alameda Park located on White Sands Boulevard in the heart of the city.

The Cottonwood Festival is the premier outdoor arts festival in the desert southwest with vendors supplying your every need. The festival is famous for it’s hand decorated and designed items that are made available to each visitor. All products sold at the festival are required to be hand made or hand embellished – no off the shelf items here! You and your family are sure to find something to fit every taste as you stroll through beautiful Alameda Park and enjoy the round-the-clock entertainment. This year in the center of the festival will be live entertainment surrounded by every delectable delight known to fair-goers. There’ll be cotton candy, snow cones, sodas, water, Mexican food, hamburgers, hot dogs, turkey legs, roasted corn – well you get the idea. Great food for a great weekend. And did we mention the festival is set September 2nd, 3rd and 4th – Labor Day weekend! That’s a great time to get out and see the sights – taste some of the best food the Tularosa Basin has to offer and indulge in home made fudge and various trinkets.

Teresa Luna at the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce was nice enough to send Steppin' Out a whole gallery of photos of the crowd, the vendors and the fun at the 2004 Cottonwood Festival. A few of those images appear in this article. So, since we had all those nice photos of kids with painted faces and babies kissing goats and such, we, took a dozen more of them and posted them in a gallery here on the Steppin Out site for our readers to see and enjoy. Click this link to see our Cottonwood Festival photo gallery (http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/pp-514/showgallery.php/cat/573).

The Festival will begin Saturday September 2nd at 10am and continue until 5pm both Saturday and Sunday. On Monday the hours are 10am to 3pm. So come-one, come-all and enjoy the desert southwest and the best New Mexico has to offer at Alamagordo’s 16th Annual Cottonwood Festival.
