They're busy making lots of dough in old Lincoln, New Mexico these days -- the type of dough that's made from flour, eggs, baking powder and water, that is! Pie makers are working overtime in an effort to perfect award-winning recipes and artists, artisans and craftsmen are spending extra hours in their studios and workshops as they prepare to display their finest hand-crafted wares at the Arts in the Orchard event on September 10. Arts in the Orchard is a celebration of the creative skills and talents of many of Lincoln County's finest artists, artisans, craftsmen, crafty ladies and pie-chefs.
During the event, the creative folks will demonstrate their skills and display and sell their works. Meanwhile Lincoln pie-chefs will compete in two friendly competitions (no six-guns allowed) to decide who bakes the best pies in Lincoln County.
Scheduled for September 10 this year, the event has long been supported and encouraged by REDTT - the state-funded Rural Economic Development Through Tourism organization. Started in 1998, Arts in the Orchard is held in Lincoln County each September. It is coordinated by REDTT's Lincoln County Tourism Council. The event is being supported this year by Partners in Preservation of the Lincoln State Monument and the Lincoln County Lodgers Tax.
Festivities will begin with an Artists' Reception on Saturday evening. The reception will be held at The Ellis Store Country Inn on September 9, and is open to particpating artists and vendors. It's purpose is to honor the creative folks who'll be displaying their wares on Sunday.

Ellis Store and Country Inn is oldest permanent residence in Lincoln County
Several of the artists will be staying at the Ellis Inn which is the located in the oldest permanent residence in Lincoln County. It was originally built in 1850 and has been continuously occupied since then; but fortunately NOT by the folks who originally built the place. Consequently the Inn is in beautiful condition and a wonderful place to relax and celebrate. As you can well imagine, local piemakers will be working late that night slaving over hot ovens to prepare for the next day.
Then on Sunday morning, the real fun begins.
Arts in the Orchard features talented and unique artisans from Lincoln County and around the state. The artists offer paintings, photography, soaps and sundries, hand-made wood items, baskets, folk art, batik clothing, leather works, wool spinning, blacksmithing products and much more. Included in the event will be an Apple Pie Contest, a Fruit of the Orchard Pie Contest, watermelon seed spitting contest and lots of food. Local musicians will entertain you as you walk around to all the vendors in a beautiful and scenic setting. The “Fruits of the Orchard” pie contest will be held with two divisions, a junior division for youth up to 16 yrs of age and a senior division (with no age limit!) Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each division.
This year's event will be held in the apple orchard on the BLM field at mile marker 93 on Highway 380 just west of Lincoln. The event will run from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $2 for adults and children under 12 are admitted free. Funds raised will go to support the Lincoln State Monument.
