Socorro –It’s harvest time and thus time for Socorro Fest, a growing celebration of music, art and the rich heritage of the Socorro area. The fourth annual Socorro Fest will be a greatly expanded event with four music stages, beer tents and a variety of tours and booths.

Set for Sep. 8-9, Socorro Fest this year coincides with the 15th annual Fat Tire Fiesta (see accomapnying article.) To see video and photos from Socorrofest 2005, see Steppin' Out's exclusive gallery here (http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/pp-514/showgallery.php/cat/510).

Plan to get in the mood for great music by attending the opening concert of New Mexico Tech’s Performing Arts Series new season on Friday. PAS brings Bearfoot Bluegrass to the Macey Center stage beginning at 7:30 pm.

Then, on Saturday activities will be centered around the historic Plaza with music on the gazebo, on the courthouse steps to the south, at the Capitol Bar and at the Garica opera House, where the Socorro Community Theater will present a comic play, and some movie clips about Socorro and Magdalena will be shown at various times. Local woodwind and brass quintets also will be playing at the Opera House.

One of the bands already booked for Socorro Fest is the new incarnation of the band formerly known as Vinegaroon. now going by the name”Roon.” Other folk music bands include Without a Drought, Last Minute Bluegrass Bnad, Rod & Carlos, the Sabinal Sisters, Stasha and Mariam and Gary Stendel, playing Old time folk.

Local favorites include Huckaby Junction, Magdalena’s award winning country band, Anthony Rosas, Bernie Romero, Eddie Benavidez y los Jesters, and Toby Jaramillo, and Tory and Richard, playing Spanish tunes, Nitefall with their unique combination of styles. In the rock genre will be bands such as Cactus Crash and Danger Byrd.

The Magdalena Steel Chicks playing steel drums and Belly Dancers also will perform.
Along with the dozens of art vendors, food vendors and kids activities, the event this year will feature a Sand Building Contest, and tours of the historic areas in horse and buggies, a self-guided Art Tour and a Ghost Tour.

Plan to set aside the entire day for this great event. For details, a new website is being constructed: www.socorrofest.com (http://www.socorrofest.com/)
