Gallery 408 - Carrizozo, NM

One of the many delightful discoveries of our Art Loop tour was the time we spent at Gallery 408 in Carrizozo. While there, we got a chance to meet and talk with Warren Malkerson who owns the Gallery together with his artist wife, Joan. What we did not realize at the time was that Joan -- who we assumed was out for lunch -- was greeting visitors and discussing her own contemporary paintings with visitors at her studio at Studios on 12th Street next door.
Although we did not meet Joan that day, we did manage to get photographs of several of Her contemporary paintings which are featured in this gallery. We believe you'll enjoy her work.
Since moving to Carrizozo a couple of years ago, the Malkersons have poured their time, resources and creative energies into fostering and expanding the community of artist who already live in Lincoln County and the Carrizozo area. Gallery 408 - a nicely done contemporary art gallery - is a key part of that effort. Studios on 12th Street is another. The Malkersons are also sponsoring a local Artist in Residence program, and are in the process of restoring a large commercial space across the street from their two existing venues for use in future arts-related projects.
Gallery 408 is an attractive space which resides in a fully restored century old building on 12th St. In the gallery they feature the works of dozens of contemporary artists from throughout New Mexico and across the country. Next door is a second building they've restored. It is devoted to providing art studio space for local artists.
Between the two buildings is a lovely and peaceful Sculpture Garden that features the works of several talented sculptors. This space is also used monthly to host a series of "Music in the Garden" concerts that are open to all. This series occurs on the first Saturday of each month throughout the summer.
Did we say Warren and Joan have put their heart and soul (along with other key parts of their anatomy) into strengthening and expanding the arts community in Carrizozo? Now you know why we said that!
The other Art Loop member artist whose work we viewed and enjoyed at Gallery 408 is Louise Groethe -- who serves as Gallery 408's manager in addition to being a remarkably talented basketmaker and Fiber Artist. There are several images of Louise's work in this gallery as well.
