Patricia Massey
Art Doll Designer
Alto, NM
By Steppin' Out Staff
One of our most-remembered visits from the 2005 Alto Artist’s Tour was the time we spent in the studio of Art Doll maker Patricia Massey of Alto. Patsy designs and creates unusual and lovely tall, thin fantasy dolls that look for all the world like they’ve just stepped off some imaginary New York or Paris haute couture’s fashion show runway. Like the fashion models they seem to parody, Patsy’s unique dolls each tend to have large expressive eyes, long fashionable lashes, plump red lips, overdone makeup and larger-than-life costume jewelry. They look for all the world the way all little girls look when they first begin playing dress-up as children.
Patricia’s collectable dolls will certainly appeal to women and girls who enjoy collecting dolls of any type but may be especially enjoyed by those who realize the fashion standards of the haute couture world tend to transform women into what can only be described as caricatures of their natural femininity.
When asked to talk about her special dolls, Patsy is quick to explain she loves making them and meets many clients who find the dolls funny and quite adorable. We couldn’t agree more. Patsy’s dolls are fun and funny and quite cute as well. It’s easy to see why her high-fashion creations have become popular collector’s items for her customers.
This year for her Art Loop presentation in addition to the popular dolls we photographed and featured last year, Patricia was also displaying a new line of tall ceramic dolls that were new this year and several very heavenly looking angel dolls as well. These items are sure to be popular additions to her existing line of high-fashion art dolls.
Frankly, we can’t wait to see what new adorable dolls Patsy will add to her line next year!
