Mystery on tap at Black Box Theatre

Las Cruces – The Black Box Theatre in Las Cruces, home to No Strings Theatre Co., is a great avante garde theater venue in New Mexico. The small theatre, seating about 92 guests, is tucked into in the Downtown Mall, which is seeing major revitalization efforts. "No Strings" produces roughly 10 shows a year and the theatre hosts an addition half dozen or more visiting troupes.

Black Box features new and untried plays and ink-still-wet scripts stirred up in a savory stew of more recent plays from major new theatre centers across the country and around the world.

In addition, the Gallery in the entry to the theatre features a changing a fine art exhibit. Through Aug. 13, a stunning "Photo Art On Silk," an exhibit by Naida Zucker, is on exhibition. The images, taken with a Nikon digital camera, are printed on silk which is stretched over the inner ring of circular frames hand-turned on a lathe.

Upcoming productions at Black Box Theatre are:

MissionaryNCo presents "Exit the King" by Eugene Ionesco, directed by Dusty Payne. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays August 4,5, 11,12 at 8:00pm with an additional 11:00 p.m. performance on Saturday, August 12. Ticket prices are $6.00 regular, $5.00 students and seniors over 65. For information and reservations call (505) 527-0207.

No Strings Theatre Company presents "Doc Holliday and the Angel of Mercy" by Oregon playwright Vaughn Marlowe, directed by NSTC’s Artistic Director Ceil Herman. Patrick Payne stars as the famous Old West gambler and gunfighter, thinking back on his life as he prepares for the Gunfight at the O.K.Corral.

Performances are Saturday, August 19 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 20 at 2:30 p.m. at the Black Box Theatre, 430 N Downtown Mall in Las Cruces.

The Mystery of the Rose Bouquet, By Manuel Puig and Directed by No Strings Theatre director Ceil Herman. Starring Wynne Broms and Amy Carpenter in a play that blends fantasy, romance and drama, by the author of "The Kiss of the Spiderwoman." Performances are September 22 - October 8, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, Sunday afternoon matinee and a special Thursday, Oct. 5 performance.
