Belen – Valencia County celebrates its farming and ranching heritage during "Rio Abajo Days" this year set for Friday through Sunday, Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1.

Rio Abajo Days Features Western Animals at Work

The Sheriff Posse Fair Grounds, (across from WalMart) will be filled with activities, contests and vendors. Entry for one day or the entire weekend is $5 for those 12 and over, Kids 12 and under Free.
The celebration abounds with family-friendly spectator events that include Western-Style Team Roping, Bull Riding, Steer Roping, Mutton Busting, Barrel Racing, Mule & Donkey Events and a Draft Horse Pull.
Adult and a Teen Dances, and live entertainment and music add to the fun and festive affair.

Organizers have lined up more than the traditional contests and entertainment for this celebration, however. For kids of all ages there is a Petting Zoo and Carnival. For the athletic minded, there is a Marathon, 5K Race, Bike race, and a Trail Ride on Sunday.
Food Booths, Sunday Pancake Breakfast, an Arts & Crafts Show, and a Chuck Wagon BBQ round out the fun.
Rio Abajo Days takes place in the Rio Abajo or "Lower River", an area of the Middle Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico that stretches from the Espanola Valley in the North to Sabinal in the South.
This heritage can be characterized by a strong sense of community that is enhanced by a rural lifestyle. Residents of the area have identified peace and quiet, friendliness of the people, and terrific weather as benefits that has made this rural setting a wonderful place to visit and live."
