Patricia Robinson
Pastels & Mixed Media
Alto, NM

Late on the final day of our Art Loop marathon, we arrived at the studio of Patricia Robinson of Alto, New Mexico. It had been a long weekend. Still, we wanted a chance meet this artist whose work we had first seen at the Art Loop Charity auction in May. So, there we were, tired but following through our plan to visit her studio. We were not disappointed. We found Patricia Robinson’s home studio without trouble. As we approached the door, we realized paintings of two smiling Ladies wrapped in attractive Mexican style tin frames were greeting us. When we opened the Studio’s door to enter, the warm smile of Patricia Robinson was waiting for us inside.
Patricia’s art is quite different from other artists we met that weekend in several ways. First, she works primarily in pastels and mixed media. Next, she prefers to paint in traditional and contemporary Hispanic styles -- and especially in the Spanish Market style. Finally, with no Hispanic artists or cultural history in her immediate family she doesn’t have many cross cultural artistic contacts who can teach her what she needs to know about the formal and informal rules of her chosen art styles.
Based on those preferences and considerations, Patricia has devised a style all her own and from what we saw in her gallery, she’s quite skillful at creating art in that style. Her art is lovely often depicting saintly Madonna-like female faces. Like Patricia herself, the women whose faces she records in her art are warm, likeable and quite universally lovely. They are also pleasant to look at and sometimes a bit provocative. Her mixed media work of Diana Goddess of Love is a case in point. Diana’s piercing eyes have a haunting see-through-you look to them and they seemed to follow us around the gallery as we enjoyed Patricia’s art.
Although we did not ask the question, we assume Patricia would also be quite an effective portrait artist. She seems to have a wonderful eye for faces and knows how to record them in a very complimentary way.
In the end, we decided we had enjoyed both Patricia and her art – and believe you will too. Her pastels have an ethereal quality that is hard to describe; but it’s hard for us to imagine that any woman whose face Patricia recreates would not both like the artist and be pleased with the result. We can offer no higher compliment than that!
