Carrizozo - Gallery 408 and the Studios on Twelfth Street is a growing Art Center in Carrizozo, New Mexico. In between the Gallery and the Studios buildings on historic Twelfth Street, is a Sculpture Garden featuring large outdoor artworks by local and national artists. This Public Art space is often visited by local people and enjoyed by all who come to the Gallery. Sometimes you can see someone eating lunch by “The Suspended Blade” and enjoying a quiet reflection by the small pool of water there. We believe that art helps us enjoy life a little more.
To continue our interest in Public Art and its affect on our community in Carrizozo, Gallery 408 is sponsoring a live Art Auction. Life size Burros (the Spanish word for donkey) painted and embellished by well known Lincoln County artists will be auctioned off on November 18th following a dinner buffet, wine reception and review. Traditionally, the Burro was the work animal of the Old West. These Burros will become the Public Art of the sidewalks and streets of Carrizozo and other public spaces in our area. Gallery 408 asked each artist to reflect on the idea of a “Burro Serenade” and create a vision of that theme. These Burros have unique songs to sing and unique personalities demonstrating the visual interests of the artists who created them.
Twenty-two artists or groups of artists were paid a small stipend for materials and time to work on their Burro sculptures and bring them to life. The profits from the Burro Serenade and Auction will benefit local Animal Care Shelters and individuals caring for stray animals. Each of the Burro sculptures have developed into unique contemporary works of art. Some are whimsical, others political. Some are religious, others speak of nature.
These amazing animals will be on review in the Gallery and the Sculpture Garden beginning November 1st.
For the past two decades, art programs and cultural organizations have put more emphasis on public art to spark contemplation and discussion. Sometimes these public works initiate a discussion of what art is. “That is the beauty of public art, the dialogue,” says Joan Malkerson, owner and curator of Gallery 408. The ideal outcome of this public art project is to achieve some kind of examination and thinking about our environment. Space and place are important to us, especially in a small town like Carrizozo.
A brief review of the artists represented in the Burro Serenade include Gena Torecelli, Carrizozo. She created a mosaic on the Burro with glass, stones, tiles, metal and paint. Sheila Lynch, Fran Alteri, and Bobby Vallejos of Carrizozo, jointly created “Gold In My Ear”, a celestial Burro displaying all twelve zodiac constellations as well as shooting stars and comets using paint, along with gold and copper leaf covered with a clear coat finish. James Mack, Carrizozo, implemented his unique style creating a Burro inspired by sunshine.
Other Burro artists include Paula Duncan, Howard and Tana Macken, Ashley and Brooke Halladay, Darcy Holmes, Susan Goewey, Mike Lagg, Ann Haile, Julia Kalkbrenner, Steve Fortelny, Bridge Beardslee, Roy Brown, Virginia Braden, Ronda Dougherty, Joan Malkerson and Louise Groethe, Amy and Free Ward, Alisa Kenyon, Timothy O’Lear, and Zoe de Negri.
Steppin' Out has also created a special gallery of images of the burros that have been completed and delivered to Gallery 408. You can view that gallery here (http://www.steppinoutnewmexico.com/pp-514/showgallery.php/cat/580).
Come visit Gallery 408 Tuesday through Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to see the Burros on review and Contemporary Art by over twenty-five local and national artists. Plan to attend the live Auction November 18th 6:00 p.m. at Gallery 408 on Twelfth Street.
