Plein Air Duo Precedes Annual Community Art Show

The works of Socorro artists will be featured in exhibits at NM Tech’s Macey Center Gallery from now until the end of the year.

An exhibition of pastel paintings by Socorro artists Liz Poulin Alvarez and Jan Thomas will hang until Nov. 12 followed closely by the annual Socorro Art Show, Nov. 14- Dec. 18.

Liz Alvarez and Jan Thomas are both plein air artists and their bright pastels reflect the surroundings in which they paint. “We sometimes go together – some times alone,” says Liz. By its nature, plein air art tends toward impressionistic, says Liz, “since we’re starting and finishing in one setting, at least that’s the task we’ve set for ourselves.” Occasionally, adjustments will be made to the original art once the piece is taken indoors but certainly, Liz says, they both use the classic, bright impressionistic colors. Liz graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and teaches art to both adults and children at New Mexico Tech.

Jan Thomas worked as an illustrator for the Natural History Museum and worked in graphic design and illustrations for several years before leaping into the painting world. “I took Liz’s class two years” says Jan, “She told me some basics, and I just took off running and I haven’t stopped since.” Jan’s first public exhibition of her paintings was during the Christmas Luminaria Art Walk held early in December last year; she sold numerous paintings that evening even though she herself was ill and her exhibit was in a room undergoing renovation.

These two artists exemplify the high caliber of art expected to be included in the Socorro Art Show which will hang at Macey Center starting during the Festival of the Cranes. This is the 4th annual show for all Socorro artists. Sponsored by the Socorro County Arts, the show invites all artists of 2-dimensional works to enter up to two pieces. Entry deadline is Oct. 31. For more information, call 835-0436.

This show is a culmination of a year’s work in all kinds of media from artists of varying backgrounds, adds Liz Alvarez.
