Hurley, New Mexico - Joseph and Karin Wade of JW Gallery found a natural art gallery in the Old Hurley Store--it's spacious and tall, with light pouring in through high windows. They've been there only since April 2005 but have already had a few super high-quality exhibits.

The store is a slice out of the past. It was used from 1912 to 1975 as the company store for the mining community of Hurley between Deming and Silver City, and still has features like a hand-operated freight elevator and the interesting original light fixtures.

The renovated building includes a frame shop, a gift shop with crafts by locals, and a small museum of Hurley artifacts, and printmaking workshops are offered at $45 for half a day or $75 for a full day.

The Wades are very accommodating to visitors and if the shop is not too busy, you can ask for a personal tour. It's in a stunning setting in this rural town near rugged, blocky cliffs and right next to two enormous smoke stacks that unfortunately will be knocked down in the spring or summer of 2007, despite the Wades' protests.

Through December 31 the gallery is featuring a printmaking show that includes works by Joseph Wade with his Hardy Boy Series as well as New Mexico and Arizona artists like Silver City-born Gloria Maya of WNMU, Christine Sandifur of Phoenix, AZ, Alexis Anderson's aquatints from Mesa, AZ, contemporary western artist Narrie Toole, ink contour drawings of Elvira Godrey, and the realistic bronze sculptures of Hal Stewart.

In short, you'll find it a very interesting place to browse and shop for a while.
