Magdalena — Magdalena’s bustling arts scene has a new kid on the block: Little Maggie’s Mercantile is open for the holiday shopping season! Located at 1006 Highway 60, across from Trail’s End Market, this beautifully restored adobe building provides a warm, attractive backdrop for a wide variety of art, fine crafts, home décor, jewelry, and other treasures from artisans both local and far-flung. Proprietors Anna and Antonio Sanchez invite you to come on in for your holiday shopping —save yourself that long trip to Albuquerque — or to warm up by the woodstove and admire the colorful displays on a grey winter’s day.

Just in time for winter, Magdalena fiber artist S. Gail Miller has brought in a line of elegant and warm coats, capes, scarves, hats and mittens, many crafted from wool, alpaca, and mohair from Magdalena’s own Mill Canyon Wool Processing. Kelly Barnitz, Linda Middleton, and Anna Sanchez offer handmade quilts for cozying up on a blustery day or brightening up corners of your home. Anna Sanchez also displays her handmade gemstone and sterling silver jewelry, perfect for indulging yourself or a special friend. Take home a stunning summerscape created by Jeanie Cooper, a Magdalena resident who gathers and dries native wildflowers and grasses to arrange behind vintage windows from old houses in town. Other area artists displaying their work at Little Maggie’s include Geraldo Kirwin, whose interactional bronze sculptures capture the essence of New Mexican people and their lives, and Natasha Isenhour, a Socorro artist whose expressionist and contemporary landscapes have captured attention far beyond our region.

You’ll find expertly matted and framed prints of several artists’ works, including the new “Anatomy Awake” series of oil paintings by Sacramento native Deborah Finn-Romero. Based on true human anatomy, these vibrant, Latin American inspired images “help create an appreciation of the nature of humans and remind us that we are all created in God’s image(ination),” Romero says. Natasha Isenhour, well-known Socorro nature artist Skeeter Leard, and others offer cards that will brighten up any recipient’s day and can even be framed for a small but eye-catching piece of art.

Little Maggie’s Mercantile also offers colorful hand-woven rugs, pottery, tinwork, ceramics, and wood carvings from around the world. We feature an exciting collection of whimsical, signed Oaxacan wood carvings, from diminutive jackrabbits to a robust fire-breathing dragon, all with exquisite detail in both form and color. Brighten up your home with colorful hand-woven wool pillow covers and rugs, large and small, from Oaxaca and other regions of Mexico, or surprise friends and family with striking Mata Ortiz pottery or the hand-painted seed pots and other treasures from Acoma potter Faye Sarracino.

Finally, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without handmade ornaments, vintage and contemporary figurines, and, of course, chile lights! We have these New Mexican specialties by the dozen, strung on light strands or loose, and you’ll love how they light up your home! Come in any day from 11 to 5 — we look forward to visiting with you!

Holly Modine's lovely hand made baskets are featured at Little Maggie's

Natasha Isenhour's lovely art cards are available

Skeeter Leard's cards and prints are also sold at Maggie's
