Making the Yuletide Bright in Nuevo Mexico

El Camino Real International Heritage Center – On Saturday, Dec. 16th from 11 am – 4 pm, celebrate the winter holiday with a Matachines dance performance by La Asociación de la Guadalupana, ornament making, lecture on foods from Spain, a visit from Santa Claus, and refreshments.<Img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/ECRIHC_Holiday_006.jpg border=2 vspace=3 hspace=3 align=right>

The day’s events include ornament making crafts projects all day in the activity room. La Asociación de la Guadalupana will present a Matachines dance performance at 12 noon.

At 3 pm, enjoy the piñata breaking followed by refreshments and a visit from Santa Claus.

At 2 pm, Bill Dunmire will present a slide show “Our Gift From Spain: How Mediterranean Plants and Foods Came to New Mexico,” the story of how Old World cultivated plants and foods made their way from pre-Colombian Spain to the colonial frontier of New Mexico and the greater Southwest.

It focuses on the positive contributions of the Spanish colonizers and missionaries and tells of how Puebloans and other native peoples in New Mexico integrated some of the crops and foods into their own cultures.

With degrees in wildlife management and zoology from the University of California, Berkeley, Bill Dunmire enjoyed a 28-year career with the National Park Service. He was Chief of Interpretation for the entire service in the mid-1970s. He also served as Superintendent of Carlsbad Caverns, NM, and Guadalupe Mountains, Texas, National Parks in 1985, then spent seven years as a field biologist in New Mexico for the Nature Conservancy. Now, he is a writer/lecturer and photographer, traveling widely to research his material.

The event is free with paid Monument admission. Free Admission for ages 16 and under. Admission $5 adults. Sundays are free for NM residents. Wednesdays free for NM seniors (60+).
