Mid-winter harvest gold: Festival donates proceeds
to NM Boys & Girls Ranches

Cuchillo – New Mexico has traditionally ranked as the nation’s third largest pecan producer behind Georgia and Texas, and in 2006, recorded a bumper crop of more than 70 million pounds. But only one place in New Mexico celebrates the harvest season with a Pecan Festival. To attend the unique event you have to be prepared to travel off the interstate highway system for a few miles.

But don't worry, it's just a few miles and these well traveled roads do lead you through some incredibly scenic views of the state as you travel along well maintained roads to this village northwest of Truth or Consequences.

Take I-25 to one of the Cuchillo Exits. Follow NM 181 to NM 52 and the signs will show you the way from there. Cuchillo is located on NM Hwy 52 about 15 miles northwest of Truth or Consequences in beautiful Sierra County. For more information call (505) 743-3201.

The annual event benefits New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranches. This year’s event is scheduled from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Fiddlers, children’s games, barbeque and vendors of all kinds will add to the festive atmosphere. And of course there will be all kinds of pecan creations – pies, pecan candy, flavored pecans, and more pecans! Hundreds of pies will be sold.
