DEMING – “Primarily self taught, I began as a portrait artist in the mid 70’s. I loved to paint the old West and legendary cowboys,” says our cover artist Lyn Orona.
At the time, she also was involved with costume designing for the Miss Ohio pageants, and Ohio State Theatrical Department and Players Theater.

Lyn Orona, stands in front of some of her favorite
paintings. Visit Lyn and husband Richard at Deming's
Galeria 200.
I was also a working model in commercial advertising for eight years. I’ve owned and operated several businesses including a custom clothing design shop in the early 80’s in Ohio. A native of Ohio, Lyn admits “ I always had a love for the Southwest.”
Moving to California in the late 80’s I began producing my own jewelry designs which supplied six galleries. My husband Richard and I expanded the jewelry business and became Silversmiths. We were in galleries and juried fine art shows in California, Arizona and Nevada until we took a break to travel.
It was during one of those “breaks” that the couple discovered Deming. They moved to southwestern New Mexico in 2003 when They seized on the opportunity to open a gallery – a dream of both of theirs.
Lyn continues to both paint (“I only paint in oil.”) and make jewelry– she often paints while tending the shop. Of the cover art, she says candidly: “It wasn’t one of my favorites. It was experimental.
It was an attempt to retrieve the art that I lost when I started painting as a teen in surreal terms and was quickly told to stop by parents and teachers. As I look back , I think they thought I was nuts.”
But, she says, while it was not one of her favorites, it seems to be a favorite of everyone else. And, she adds, “it sold.”
Her favorites tend toward her portraitures, including “On Old Miner,” As a painter, she tries to expand her repertoire, she says. “It try to stretch, to do different things whether it’s abstract or portraiture.”
Lyn is just completing her 6th commissioned work and says she paints everyday. Past commissions include murals up to one that was 36-inches by 48-inches.
I also enjoy photography and writing children’s stories. I’ve published poems in the 1995 Treasured Poems of America.
She is an associate member of The American Academy of Women Artists, and a member of the Black Range Artists.
You may view her work at their Galeria 200, 200 S. Gold, In Deming. The gallery is open Tues -Fri--10- 5pm, Sat. 10-4pm; call (505)546-9590 or visit www.galeria200.com (http://www.galeria200.com/)
