Socorro, NM – The 7th Mother’s Day PowWow, May 12 & 13, expands its horizons this year. Last year, the popular event brought the Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall to Socorro’s Sedillo Park. This year, the PowWow Committee and the Socorro Schools will combine to bring exhibits from NASA Space Center as part of the event’s theme “Traditions & Beyond.”

In addition to viewing the history of man’s travels in space (and maybe trying on a space suit), the PowWow will bring hundreds of dancers for the two-day competition and plenty of other exhibitions as well.

The PowWow begins on Saturday at noon and continues to midnight with contests and intertribal dancing; and continues on Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm with more contests and awards. There is no admission charge.

There will be two Grand entries- 7 pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday with gourd dancing, special enter-tainment, drum contests and grass dances.
The Socorro Chile Proppers will bring their smaller planes for flight demonstrations and there will be a special fundraiser for the Firefighters Memorial proposed for the State Fire Academy in Socorro.

The PowWow committee has purchased a 22-foot teepee to be at the site and the Chile Ristra hot-air balloon will be tethered nearby.

Stroll around the booths which will offer jewelry and gift items as well as a variety of foods to purchase. Be sure to bring your own chair so you can sit and watch the multitude of traditions presented by the dancers.

Participants come from many states and regions to join in this popular event. This year’s participants include the Mescalero Gourd Society, Flag Bearers; Otis Half Moon, Nez Perce, Master of Ceremonies; and Eddie Little Sky, Lakota, Arena Director.
