Socorro, NM – The Women of the West History Parade will wind its way from Sedillo Park to the Plaza on Saturday, May 12 starting at 1 pm.
It’s the 8th –and maybe final – parade that is the heart of the celebration of the event which began as a unique Women’s History program at Socorro’s Zimmerly Elementary School. Teachers Theresa Apodaca and Kathe MacLaren developed the history and art enrichment program for their fourth and fifth grade students.

They recruited Theresa’s mother, Fita, who made period costumes for the students; and Judy Lovelace, whose knowledge of the area’s history and people added an invaluable contribution.

The students and teachers created a booklet with their stories and feted the women and their families with a dinner in their honor. Then they shared their knowledge and traditions during a day long celebration on Mothers Day weekend.
But now, the teachers have moved to other positions – Theresa Apodaca teaches middle school and Kathe MacLaren teaches in Magdalena. “We’ve enjoyed it,” says Judy, “but we’re tired. So unless we can find someone to take it over, this is it.”
The parade will not be some somber event, no dirge to mourn the event’s passing, however. It’s sure to be a colorful parade with many of the Mother’s Day Pow Wow participants entering in.
Plus there will be a new complement of honorees chosen as representative of the fine women around the county who contribute and have contributed to the health, welfare and culture of our communities. (Those honorees were not yet available at press time.)
At the head of the parade will ride Judy Lovelace, Fita Apodaca, Theresa Apodaca and Kathe MacLaren, as the “Parade Marshallettes”. It’s the last hurrah! And a fitting tip of the hat to a great event that has contributed to our understanding of our history – and a tribute to the great work these ladies have done.
