Belen, NM – The Historic Belen Harvey House is still making its mark on history – and you can experience some of that history in April. Then, in May be sure to experience the wonderful art in the exhibit hall during the annual juried Belen Art League Spring Show beginning May 5.

The Doodle Bug is coming to the Belen Harvey House. The Doodle Bug was the train that ran between Albuquerque and El Paso in the 1950s. The old train, moved from its storage in California, will be in the museum parking lot and will find a permanent installation in Belen.

Its arrival is timed with a new exhibition by the current passenger train, the new Railrunner. Another exhibit will examine “The Reading Room Years at the Belen Harvey House.” The exhibits open April 5 and continue through April 28. A special reception on Sunday, April 15 from 1-4 pm will honor those who spent time in the reading room.
After the Harvey House closed as a restaurant, the buildings were used by the railroad as a place where crews could rest between runs. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the Belen Reading Room housed railroad workers waiting for their shift on a train running west to Gallop and Winslow or east to Clines Corners or South to El Paso. “It was the name given by the Railroad to the rooming houses,” explains Maurine McMillan, director of the Belen Harvey House. “The railroad set them up in the early years so the crews had a place to go instead of the bars. Belen was famous for its reading room,” she says, adding it was a busy one with the east-west runs.
At the Sunday reception, those who spent time at the Reading Room are invited to come and share their memories. Docents will be available to collect the memories from visi-tors.
