Everyone's a Poet – Come Share Your Favorites
at Manzanares St. Coffeehouse in Socorro, NM
“A Book of Verses underneath the Bough,
A Jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread – and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness
Oh, Wilderness were Paradise enow!”
– Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, translated by Edward Fitzgerald
Socorro, NM – Spring and Poetry. It’s a natural combo this time of year – like love and roses. And the Steppin’ Out crew is really excited to announce our first ever Open Mic Poetry Reading on Sunday, April 29 at 2 pm.
Come, bring your favorite poem by you or your favorite poet. We’ve picked an easy-to-find, beautiful spot in Socorro for this event: The Manzanares Street Coffeehouse is just east of the southeast corner of our historic plaza. Formerly the Black Dog Coffeehouse, new owners Patty and Carl Frisch have created a poetic atmosphere and offer a variety of light drinks, food and desserts (including homemade sorbets. Ymmm!)
You’ll get the added benefit of seeing some of Fernando Mercado’s paintings, currently on exhibit at the coffeehouse.
Steppin’ Out’s Poet Gair Linhart has graciously agreed to coordinate the day’s readings. We invited Maya Angelou but Gair really preferred Ogen Nash – both of whom will may be there in spirit. So we’re really hoping you join us in the spirit of spring and beauty and celebrating the season.
Praise the spells and bless the charms,
I found April in my arms.
April golden, April cloudy,
Gracious, cruel, tender, rowdy;
April soft in flowered languor,
April cold with sudden anger,
Ever changing, ever true-
I love April, I love you.
– OGDEN NASH
To the birds that steak across the mountains in the breeze
We are just a nuisance to be endured
Neither Troy nor Hiroshima left them much impressed or too concerned
If our race should quit the earth, the birds would carry on without a blink
But if we awoke one day without them
To lift us with song and flight
Then the poet in each heart would perish
And the window to the soul could pass no light
