Alto, NM – Spencer Theater brings the popular music of John Phillip Sousa and award winning Native American violinist Arvel Bird to the auditorium during April.

April 21, 8 pm: By following his personal philosophy of giving people what they want, the rousing music of John Phillip Sousa became the proud march of America. He produced exactly what his country hankered to hear, and in the process gained worldwide fame. Indeed, Sousa was the “March King,” a title respective of the 100+ marches he wrote while leading the U.S. Marine Band from 1880-1892 and while conducting his own Sousa Band which toured the US and Europe until nearly the close of his life in 1932. In fact, Sousa’s patriotic magnum opus, The Stars and Stripes Forever, was named the “National March of the United States of America” by an Act of Congress and is quite possibly the most famous march in the world. “Oh Mr. Sousa!” is a musical biography featuring a 22-member concert band, 24 pieces of Sousa’s music – marches, operettas and songs – are performed together with vignettes from his colorful life. A nine-person cast slips in and out of the tribute’s 37 roles which narrates his biography from beginning to end. You’ll be on your feet for this show’s end!
Spencer Theater is offering a special discount to band members, musicians and their families. Call the box office for more information, 888.818.7872

April 27, 8 pm: Mix the innate musical talents of a Southern Piute Indian with Scottish fury and what do you get? Arvel Bird, the award winning Native American violinist. Performing an eclectic blend of classical, bluegrass, Celtic, folk, country and Native American rhythms, Bird is a maestro of a new age. Performing with his trio, he incorporates the Native flute, rattle and chants with his violin melodies which depict his culture and traditions. As can be heard in any of his ten CD recordings, Bird has a visceral passion for fiddling that radiates with each pull of his bow. He’s wonderfully physical in his performance style, filling concert halls with his vibrancy and flare. Check him out! This will be a unique concert experience, spon-sored by the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino as part of their Native American Showcase Series.
