National Hispanic Cultural Center Exhibit now in Hurley, NM

Hurley, NM –A traveling exhibit detailing the personal lives of an Hispanic community of Albuquerque is now on exhibit at JW Gallery till July.
“Barelas a traves de los anos (Barelas across the years): A Pictorial History of a Community” will hang at the JW Gallery from April 12 to July 12.

The multi-media exhibition is comprised of a 75-100 piece installation of photographs, oral history recordings and historical documentation. The project gives viewers a detailed look at the people of the Barelas community using a myriad of mediums and impresses the audience with the importance of honoring and recording the history of people and their communities.

The project is designed to inspire other communities to document their histories. Through a series of lectures and training, scholars will guide participants in each of the four communities to develop their own local history exhibit, documentary, or archive to preserve and present the history of the area.

The project will then perpetuate the creation of multiple documenta-ries across New Mexico. As a result, the Barelas project will serve as a catalyst for honoring and docu-menting the lives of people – their history, traditions, photographs, and stories – across New Mexico.

The ambitious new effort to preserve and honor the Indo-Hispanic culture of Grant County is the project of Casa de la Cultura en Santa Clara. A non-profit orga-nization, led by WNMU professor Dr. Maria Eugenia Trill, CASA is already engaged in activities including Teatro Bilingue, Latino dancing, and instruction in video-documentary and other digital/media elements to youth. They are working toward opening a gallery for local and invitational art and crafts and to promote storytelling and poetry in the area.

Dr. Trillo and Carlos Vasquez, of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, will teach the workshops. The project is spon-sored by Casa de las Cultura en Santa Clara, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, NHCC Foundation, New Mexico Humanities Council.
Along with the Barelas exhibit, JW Gallery will present new works by Joseph Wade and bronze sculptures by Hal Stewart, western paintings by Narrie Toole and Shannon Sternweis, limited edition prints titled “Toenails” by “Shoofly” Schufelt, pen and ink drawings by Elvira Godfrey and pastels by Valdeen Wooten.

The opening reception for the Barelas exhibit will be on Thursday, April 12 at the JW Gallery on 99 Cortez Ave. in Hurley, with live music, refreshments, and guest speakers for entertainment. A closing event is also being prepared with local and invited musicians who will make a CD to benefit CASA. The event is co-sponsored by the NHCC, who contributed the photo exhibit, and CASA.
