Deming, New Mexico - June 6: The Adobe Deli is a classy cowboy joint and bar in Deming that will have 18 cars and trucks in its parking lot on a Thursday night even though its 8 miles outside town.

The atmosphere is friendly, funny, and brash, with red beaded lampshades that look as if they came from a turn-of-the-century Texas bordello and outrageous signs everywhere that say things like “No Dancing on the Pool Table with Spurs” or “No Garbage Picking.” There’s a real windmill in the restaurant and a huge screen where sports events or country music videos are played.

The Adobe Deli has a loyal local clientele base, but owner Van Jacobsen claims he knows people who come twice a month from Tucson. He says some customers from Hawaii, Guam, and Alaska hear about them from co-workers at Homeland Security at Playas.

People come primarily because of the food, mostly steak and seafood. The rib-eye steak is blissfully tender and crisp, “well-marbled” to perfection, not to mention huge. They have the typical NY Strip, T-bone and Porterhouse steaks, as well as the more high-toned salmon steak or Osso Buco served with asparagus, pork chops with sliced ginger, and Alaskan King Crab.

Their Adobe Deli Onion Soup appetizer, made with locally-made St. Clair cabernet, is one of the wonders of the local culinary world, with gobs and gobs of Acosta Asadero cheese made just down the road. There are also less-expensive dishes like Cheeseburger in Paradise and Sausage and Pepper Hero. And don’t overlook the Roadkill Rabbit “fresh daily off 549.”

In the same building they have a deli shop where they sell mostly Boars Head meats, which they also serve in lunchtime sandwiches. There’s also a smoke shop and a room for smoking that they’re fixing up right now. And they have an oxygen bar with about a dozen scents. The Adobe Deli also has a catering service that has brought them as far as Las Vegas, Nevada for a wedding.

Restaurant hours are Mon-Sat 6pm-10pm, bar hours are 2pm-12am Mon-Sat and 2pm-12pm Sunday. 546-0361. For more information, visit their web site at: www.adobedeli.com (http://www.adobedeli.com/)
