<img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/award_icon.gif hspace=3 align=left border=1>Columbus, New Mexico - Art at the Western Edge in Columbus -- New Mexico's only fly-in Art Gallery and B&B -- is hanging a totally new exhibit during the month of June, this time works by photographers all over southwest New Mexico, from Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Hillsboro, and Columbus.

The opening, or “May Happening,” was on May 20, and it was a time for vibrant conversation, for exposure of talent, for purchasing art, and for the desert to bloom. The AWE Gallery is a wonderful venue for art, in an isolated spot surrounded by yucca blossoms and mesquite bushes a mile from Route 11 north of Columbus. It’s in a perfect adobe-style building with corbels and buttresses and a convenient airstrip outside for those who are stopping by in their private plane.

Bea Garrett from Las Cruces has created representations of low-keyed, subtle natural phenomena of southern New Mexico like grasses and bushes, and Embree “Sunny” Hale of Hillsboro has hiked widely in southern New Mexico to catalogue petroglyphs on remote rocks. There are a few portraits of old junked cars by Kelly Harwood of Alamagordo in a sizzling black and white style. A montage of some of the best Luna County scenic photographs that I’ve ever seen, put together by Larry Miller of Columbus, played during the reception on a PC, and matted color prints by Gordon Taylor captured sunsets, an intriguing horned toad on the desert floor, and a beautiful white datura flower in Columbus.
Jeri Sue Heath co-owner of AWE is holding another of her one-day workshops on July 14. It will be a poetry writing workshop given by Harriet de Busk and will cost just $25. For more information call Jeri Sue at 642-3641. You might consider staying in her Windwalker Fly-In Ranch B&B.

Steppin' Out's webmaster, Greg Platt, and his wife Linda actually stayed at AWE during their February trip down to Columbus for Pancho Villa Weekend. They report the B&B provides a very nice environment. The beds were excellent and very comfortable. The prices were quite fair and the breakfast -- cooked by Jeri-Sue herself -- was both delicious and bountiful. The rooms are tastefully decorated, bright and and pleasant and the company and time spent chatting over coffee on Sunday morning was the best part of all.

More precisely, they personally rated their stay at AWE in these words:"The gallery, though small is well done and the art quality is remarkable. We definitely enjoyed our private tour there. Jeri-Sue has done a fine job of picking very high-quality local artists whose art is was quite impressive. We found the B&B tastefully decorated and far better than we'd even expected. Overall, we rate our visit as 'a 12 on a 10 point scale ...very nice. We *highly* recommend the place! Jeri-Sue is an impeccable hostess not to mention warm and friendly. We instantly felt at home as though we were visiting old and dear friends. You'll love Jeri-Sue and her yummy breakfast too!"

P.S. to Jeri-Sue: Thanks very much for an extremely enjoyable visit. At the end of a long, hot day we slept like two babies. You made our 33rd anniversary very special for us. After all these years, that's a really pleasant memory indeed!

Warmest Personal Regards,
Greg and Linda Platt
Socorro, New Mexico

Needless to say, Art on the Western Edge wins Steppin' Out's "World Class Customer Service Award" for June-July 2007 hands down. Congratulations, Jeri-Sue!
