Like her famous sister, Route 66, US Highway 60 is an original national highway, linking regions of the United States in the 1920s in a new, more easily assessable manner. While Rt. 66 from Chicago to California was immortalized with writings and song, Hwy. 60 is truly a “transcontinental” road running from Virginia Beach, Va., to just outside Las Angeles, Ca. Furthermore,, unlike portions of Rt. 66 which have disappeared entirely with the interstate system, Hwy. 60 remains almost entirely intact. It’s a wonderful way to see the countryside and experience the small-town, rural atmosphere of the many towns through which the road takes you.

A small, but significant slice of the roadway and its verdant, colorful history lies just west of Socorro in the western half of New Mexico.

Magdalena at one time was a major mining town as well as the “End of the Line”: the destination of cattle drives from all over western New Mexico to the railroad and thus to Chicago. It’s varied history includes the little known fact that Katherine Hepburn made a movie here in 1947.

Today, Magdalena has a growing art community with several art galleries and gift shops. It’s also home to the London Frontier Theatre Company at the WPA Theatre. (See……. For more information about the theatre.)

The village annually hosts an Old Timers’ Reunion, a weekend of rodeo, arts and crafts, music, contests and one of the biggest and best parades in the region. Old Timers’ Reunion is held each year the weekend after the 4th of July.

Year round, in addition to the art possibilities, there’s several tourist-related opportunities including some beautiful hiking trails and camping nearby. Overnight accommodations and good restaurants make this village a great retreat off the beaten path. For more information, visit www.magdalena-nm.com

Continuing west, Hwy. 60 takes you to the San Agustin Plains and the Very Large Array radio telescopes and onto the Continental Divide. Nestled in the rolling hills of the region just west of that landmark is Pie Town. As the name implies, travelers can feast on some absolutely delicious pies (as well as good meals before dessert!) Check out www.dailypie.com for details about food.
