The fabulous cabins at Bear Creek Lodge look something like tree houses. They have rustic porches on both first and second floors, and some have winding wooden walkways that wrap around them. The builder made way for Ponderosa Pines coming up through holes cut in the porch floors and roofs, and on windy days you can watch the trees sway. The fifteen cabins perch on hillsides thick with pines.
Each cabin is unique, even a work of art, with its own arrangement of bedrooms and kitchens, stairways and porches, fireplaces and free-form skylights at the peaked roofs. They're all arranged for the privacy of the families or group of guests.
They're a wonderful getaway for people every year, summer or winter.

Pinos Altos is only 7 miles from Silver City, but it could be a hundred miles, it is so remote and quiet. The cabins retain a rustic feel but contain most amenities, like satellite TV and microwave ovens.
Dawn and Bill Donnel have owned the lodge for almost two years and are still renovating them--removing the built up wax from the saltillo tile floors and building a small meeting house for guests to use as a retreat.
Guests come for all kinds of reasons. They had a group of elderly motorcycle riders from Canada recently, who came for the beautiful rides like the Trail of the Mountain Spirits that goes to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. There was also a mother and her two daughters who went horseback riding with WolfHorse Outfitters, a Native American Guide Service in the Gila Wilderness.

There are hiking trails that leave right from the cabin area, with wooden signs pointing to "Game Preserve- 9 mi." and "Old Stagecoach Road." Winter guests love to use these trails for cross-country skiing. There's also excellent birding, cycling, and general touring of the Silver City area with its concentration of arts and events.
About a third of the parties that stay there include kids, and Bear Creek has hosted family reunions and even a couple small weddings. The Bear Creek staff is very willing to reserve a meal at a restaurant or provide information about things to do. They unload armloads of free firewood to guests all year round. Pets are allowed, and there’s even a fenced-in area for dogs to frolic. “That’s a big deal with some people,” Dawn says.
Call 888-388-4515 for reservations, or go to their website, www.BearCreekCabins.com (http://www.BearCreekCabins.com) for a fun virtual tour of the cabins. Be sure to mention that you learned about them through Steppin' Out – that will make them smile. Thanks!
