Carrizozo, NM hosts celebration
honoring a way of life
Carrizozo – Think of Cowboys. Not the Dallas Cowboys – the genuine, working cowboy. What comes to mind is the Cowboy Way – solid character, sound family values, good common sense, loyalty, patriotism and an honest work ethic. Those qualities are what made and make the cowboy a national, cultural heritage.

It’s that heritage that is celebrated on the National Day of the Cowboy, this year set for July 27- 28. And the town of Carrizozo plans a huge, day long jubilee to mark its proud history. The day begins at 7 with a round-up (which you can watch) followed by breakfast of biscuits and gravy.
A parade at 10 am will be followed by lots of entertainment at the bandstand to be set up next to the Museum. Western Bands, awards, story telling and poetry will begin at 11 at the bandstand, with a fashion show, moustache contest, and fancy rope demonstrations interwoven with singing and fiddlers. A no-host chuck wagon lunch will be served from 11:30 – 2 pm. A chile cook-off adds spice to the feast and day’s fare.
Afternoon events include a kids’ rodeo at McDonald Park with broomstick barrel racing, wooden cow milking and more contests and prizes.
Watch the horse shoeing demonstrations by local farriers on 12th street.
Next door at the former Hardware Store on 12th St., now Malkerson Hall, a juried art show of national western artists will be exhibited from 9 am to 5 pm.
All day long, exhibits and display of ranch life will be open for viewing at the Museum Heritage Hall; with longhorn cattle penned nearby. Old photographs and memorabilia also will be on display. Other notables include demonstrations on “how to crease a Western Hat.

It’s all free (except the food) so come on out for a lot of fun and some good learnin’: “Y’all come!”
