HUB CITY MUSIC FEST, SUMMER 2007
By Reverend Bec, SONewMex's Belen Representative
No sooner do they dedicate their new "Heart of Belen Plaza", they go ahead and use it! Imagine that!
A unique, diverse, interesting and fun place where local residents can participate in many different, community-oriented activities, the City of Belen offers a wide variety of family-oriented, fun events all summer long that appeal to all age ranges and people with special needs, while at the same time allowing local artists to share their many talents, and promoting tourism and business in the area.
There are three lively, delightful events, with all kinds of local arts and crafts, foods, games, festivities, music and vendors, scheduled throughout the summer for children of all ages.<img src=http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/images/BelenMusic.JPG align=right hspace=4 alt>
First, on June 16th, there is a Karaoke sing-off from 6 to 9 in the evening, with categories for kids 12 and under, youths 13 to 21, and adults. First-place winners from each group will receive a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart and a beautiful plaque. This event is so popular, please sign up early, as the spots get filled very quickly.
Then, from 9 to 11, you'll kick up your heels and dance to live music as the very best of our local artists perform for you.
Next, on June 30th, there will be a wide variety of music from more local-area artists, followed by a spectacular fireworks display.
The Summer Fest will conclude on July 28th when you'll be able to dance to the oldies, also performed live. There are even going to be jitterbug and hula hoop contests, a climbing wall and a "Show & Shine" classic car show. The City's Recreation Director, Brenda Gurule, stated with a grin "I hope the weather cooperates!".
She also told me these are "great family events, and I'm looking forward to all the people attending and having all kinds of fun".
By the way, her wish came true the very first night of the Music Fest, May 12th, the community came pouring out to dance to New Mexico-style music, and have a blast. The air was filled with jubilation as young and old alike celebrated on a beautiful spring night just for the sake of the joy and celebration.
The Heart of Belen Plaza is located on the corner of Becker/Dalies and Main Street in Belen. For more information and/or to offer your talents for these events, please call Belen Recreation Center at 864-0584.
