Once again, Steppin' Out is steppin' out over boundaries a this time, the self-imposed boundary of a single image spanning the length of the front cover. In searching for the "perfect" picture/image to capture the essence of a New Mexico summer, we came across not one but two. So, when it comes to choosing-we chose both.
Patterson Canyon Rainbow captured by Michael Mideke, beautifully depicts the outdoors when kissed by rain. It's a scene we've been blessed with so far this year a and the results are exquisitely dramatic as you see while driving along any road. Critically acclaimed in that arena, he pulled up roots to move to Magdalena where he hooked up with the London Frontier Theatre Co., where he videographs productions. There may not be a more excited person in the state right now. Connie Baca, the T or C artist who created "Mi Casa es Su Casa" has been tickled pink since we agreed to print her painting. <img src=http://steppinoutnewmexico.com/images/ConnieBacaCeleste.JPG align=left hspace=4 alt>She's been after us for awhile, as a matter of fact. Connie's the affable person who's likely to greet you as you walk into Celestial Creations in T or C. She's sweetheart and always giving of her time and efforts a so it's doubly appropriate that we print her painting which to us evokes the comfortable "compadre" feeling of families in these parts.
Connie and her 11 siblings were born to Andy and Veronica Sullivan and raised in Santa Fe. She's been creating since her early school years but only recently began painting. Connie entered "Mi Casa" in the Sierra County fair where it garnered a red ribbon. "I've always been thankful to that judge from Socorro," she said, "because she added her comments" about how to improve the picture. Connie immediately set to work making many of those changes, adding to her experience and knowledge for the future. "I like a lot of color," Connie says. "When we're driving down the road, I'm always sticking my head out of the car to see things."
A naturally giving person, Connie has donated some of her works to local, non-profits, and of course as gifts. "I love to share and I never had money to give so now I can give pictures!"
Celestial Creations owner Celeste Rich is my inspiration," says Connie. "She's really encouraged my arts and she's a great boss!" She also thanked her husband of 38 years, Andy Baca; they have three children: Annette, Paul and Jimmy. And Connie notes proudly that her grandchildren are definitely showing signs of artistic ability.
