The Fiesta runs August 31-September 2 at North Park with music going into the wee hours and vendors selling gorditas, corn on the cob, taquitos, and other goodies. It's a relaxed family affair, and people often bring lawn chairs or sit on the grass to enjoy the great music.
Other popular Tejano and Norteno groups who will appear include Algo Nuevo Band from Las Cruces, Las Florecitas (Three Twins) from Albuquerque, Grupo Majeztad from El Paso (a Norteno Group), a Juan Gabriel impersonator, and folklorico dancers.
Hugo Guerrero's talents as a vocalist, arranger and producer, have helped shape the Tejano music scene. Hugo was born in Mexico and educated in the United States. He developed a natural talent for music at a very early age. By the age of 18, Hugo was already a recording artist and was performing throughout Texas and the interior of Mexico.
His voice and musical arrangements can be heard in the early recordings of Little Joe and Johnny Hernandez, as well as many others.
It was only natural that after years of performing for other bands, Hugo decided to form his own. He teamed up with his friend, Balde Muņoz, and together they formed FandangoUSA. The hit single "La Charanga" was released shortly after.
FandangoUSA's great hit gave Hugo instant name recognition in the Tejano music industry. Since then, Hugo has won many major industry awards, including the Texas Talent Music Awards.
Guerrero is currently collaborating with the Dallas/Ft Worth-area group Pueblo Band. Besides energizing their live shows, they have been recording new material in the studio for an upcoming CD to be released by Hacienda Records in 2007.
The Tejano Fiesta, now in its 9th year, has been gaining popularity as it grows. A committee of one, Robert Gonzalez is dedicated to bringing Tejano music to the far reaches of southwest New Mexico. Last year the Tejano Fiesta attracted 2,000-3,000 fans. You can easily stay overnight in one of the numerous motels in Lordsburg, and there are several restaurants in town.
Gonzalez grew up in Lordsburg listening to Tejano music on the radio and at times live right there in town. Until a year ago there was a nightclub called La Fiesta in Lordsburg, where Gonzalez listened to Little Joe y la Familia, Jimmy Edwards, and other Tejano greats in the seventies. "They had a nice wood dance floor," he says. He thinks the night spot was established many decades ago.
When Gonzalez used to go to Tejano concerts in other cities, he started saying that he "wanted something for Lordsburg." It's their biggest event of the year and a shot in the arm for their economy.
Tejano music comes from south and central Texas, and some trace its roots back into the 1800s. One of the most famous Tejano singers was Selena, who was murdered in 1994. Other well-known Tejano artists and groups are Freddy Fender, the Kumbia Kings, Emilio Navaira, and Patsy Torres.
