Here's her artist's statement:
"The "Garden Gate" photo was captured on a cool, cloudy, rainy day in October, 2006, on the beautiful grounds of the Ellis Store Country Inn owned by David and Ginny Vigil in Lincoln, NM. This spectacular scene was stumbled upon while on a field trip with Bruce Gaucher's photography class through the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
"Travel photography captured my heart twenty-years ago when I was working as a travel agent.
"I put my camera down for long periods of time over the last 10-years while working as a massage therapist. I always missed photography and was thrilled to see classes being offered through the Roswell Museum. The classes and the gift of a new camera from my husband, Rick, prompted me to pick up my camera again.
The Roswell Museum has found the perfect photography teacher in Bruce Gaucher. Not only is Bruce an enviable professional photographer he also possesses the true heart of a teacher. Bruce is so willing to share his knowledge and is thrilled to watch his students grow in their knowledge of photography. I owe many thanks to Bruce for helping me capture not only this beautiful photo of The Garden Gate, but also for helping me learn and grow in my photography skills.
"I was born and raised in Artesia, New Mexico where I have lived my entire 43-years. My husband, Rick, and I own a laser engraving business called Excalibur Laser Creations. We can be reached at 505-746-4334. We started our business by engraving my photography onto sheets of silver acrylic. We were commissioned by the Mack Chase family to engrave 18 pieces of oil and gas related photography for the decor of The <img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/KimKafton3_web.jpg align=left hspace=4 alt="Kim Kafton">Paddock Cafe in Riverside, NM, 15-minutes east of Artesia. Our laser engraver can engrave on glass, crystal, tile, wood, stone, acrylic, metal, and leather. We can be found in the Artesia phone book, and you can find us at several of this fall's weekend art festivals. My photography can also be found in original form as well as engraved form hanging at The Gallery in Roswell.
Pengwen note: Kim Kafton's stunning photography graces our cover this issue. And while we enjoy her visuals in vivid color, we also were delightfully surprised to find her artfully presented black and white photography. We think Kim has a great future in the photography world and welcome her to our list of cover artists.
