But mostly these very talented people, like the little villa north of the City of Socorro, are hidden, “escondida”.

This year an already popular event will offer you a glimpse into the studios of some of these talented people during the first Festival of the Cranes Art Studio Tour. The one-day tour features 11 venues and dozens of artists all within a few miles of the main Festival of the Cranes site, the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Spectacular views at each venue and along the way are assured!

The tour concept evolved from Barbara Szabo’s original idea. A master potter, Barbara and husband have built their home and studio east of San Antonio along Highway 380. It’s a beautiful spot which Barbara has learned is also an historic site along the railroad.

“As a potter,” she writes, “I studied with David Stewart, master potter in San Diego. Every year he had a one-day show at his own home, and made most of his living for the year from it. People arranged their vacations to come and buy up his work that day. I’ve been a potter for 30 years and have done art shows, sold to galleries and to shops, but I like selling right from my own studio the best, as he did.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 align=right border=0><CAPTION align=bottom>Painter Jan Svoboda is one of the dozen artists who will participate in the 1st Annual Festival Studio Tour.</CAPTION><TBODY><TR><TD>http://sonewmex.com/images/gotart_Jan_Svoboda.jpg</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>“I thought, Festival of the Cranes week is the best time of year to do this, and planned my own open house show.” After talking with Beverly Hansen, Barbara found there were other artists in the area interested in a “show at home” too.

“If we all had open houses on the same day of the year, we could call it a tour.” In a short time, Barbara put together a bakers dozen of venues, found sponsors and produced maps and brochures for the one-day tour.

Special seasonal exhibits, studios and galleries are part of the tour, Maps and tour brochures are available at the Socorro Chamber of Commerce, Socorro Heritage and visitor Center, Bosque del Apache Nature Center, and Macey Center; or call 575-452-6300.

South of Socorro: San Antonio and beyond

• Barbara Szabo’s Casa Loma Pottery, 845 Hwy 380, about 8 miles east of San Antonio. Szabo’s beautifully crafted pottery comes in all shapes and sizes. She is also represented by Pepper’s Gallery in Magdalena and Sundance Gifts on the plaza in Socorro;
• Galeria del Bosque, intersection at San Antonio; Brazillia’s whimsical paintings often exploring mystical themes; and Clark Fisher’s wood works;
• Jana Svobodova’s photography at the Dancing Cranes Studio near San Antonio. Jana who hails from Prague, Czech Republic, and husband, Jim Platte, own an import business in Salt Lake City called Dancing Cranes and have chosen a casa near the Bosque del Apache as their eventual nesting spot – near their beloved cranes.
• Sharon Fullingim’s studio in Luis Lopez; Sharon plays with etchings, with sculptures and with stone carving. A co-owner of Fullingim- Isenhour-Leard Galleries, she has shown extensively;
• Painter Beverly Hansen, Luis Lopez and her Pink Pig Studio. Beverly’s brightly painted flowers, birds and landscapes are utterly charming. Her “Garden Visitor” painting of a butterfly and flower adorned Steppin’ Out’s cover of AprilMay, 2006;
• Other San Antonio area art venues are the Wildlife Art Show at the Bosque del Apache NWR and Sichler’s Art Tent, at the intersection in San Antonio.
