Included in the Festival’s major events will be the four day (Thurs.- Sat.) Wildlife Art Show and sale under the big-top on the refuge, featuring 28 of the region’s most talented artists with their wildlifeinspired works in every medium.

This year’s Festival offering, described in detail in the catalog, features several new events, along with lots of old-time favorites...a combination that coordinator Tom Harper assures is sure to please festival veterans and newcomers alike. Catalogs are available, while they last, at the refuge Visitor Center, the Socorro County Chamber of Commerce, and the Socorro Visitors Bureau. Details also are listed online at [url="http://www.friendsofthebosque.org/"]www.FriendsoftheBosque.org (http://www.friendsofthebosque.org/)

Among the highlights, William DeBuys’ keynote address in the Macey Center auditorium on Thursday evening will follow the traditional buffet dinner on the mezzanine. DeBuys, professor of the Documentary Studies at the College of Santa Fe, conversationalist and author of six books, will discuss the many ways the Rio Grande binds us to our geographic homes and to each other. Meenakshi Nagendran’s Saturday keynote address is titled “A Glimpse into the World of Cranes.” A specialist in costume-rearing and release of cranes into the wild, Nagendran earned her Ph.D. at North Dakota State University, working on cranes’ developmental behavior and satellite telemetry to learn more about crane migration.

Look also for a vibrant schedule of activities Friday afternoon and evening hosted by the City of Socorro...a dozen fun activities, most of them free, including the popular hands-on class on how to prepare traditional New Mexico foods; the “Social on the Plaza” from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., where you can sample local microbrews and regional wines. In the evening, rock to the vocals of Chris Calloway (http://sonewmex.com/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&id=245), jazz diva daughter of Cab Calloway, introducing herself as a singer and the torch bearer of the 60-year Calloway Legacy.

Space here does not permit more than a cursory review of Festival 20th, but a schedule of events and registration information, along with a tab of programs that are open for registration, is posted on www.friendsofthebosgue.org/crane (http://www.friendsofthebosgue.org/crane).
