Let the pirates have the watery oceans. There’s treasure to be found upon the lifegiving land. In a sea of rural beauty, lies Oso Art Gallery. With the mark of the bear as its logo, it stands, embracing within its open doors, stores of beauty and taste wrought by the hand of the sculptress, the jeweler, the painter, the weaver and more.

Leif Anckers’s hand-made airplanes hang from the ceiling in one room, ribs exposed to reveal the craftsmanship within. Formed from precision cut wood, each piece of the many large planes has been cunningly engineered to fit the aerodynamic whole.

Many of the photos reveal Carrizozo as it used to be. The exhibit of airplanes and aerial photos will continue through October.

In keeping with Oso Art Gallery’s stated mission to showcase local artists, several artists have been given studio space in the gallery’s second building. These studios are open to the public. You can meet with the artists and watch them work if you like. In keeping with the general ambiance of Capitan, there is a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at these studios.

Featured at the open studios are Michelle Caskey, Linda Caperton, and Jeannie Adams. Michelle Caskey creates collage / painting multi-media pieces. Linda Caperton paints on silk, and Jeannie Adams creates life-like nature images on stone. In November, the Oso Gallery will feature Newburn Taylor, who creates fascinating and colorful works using colored pencil and ink as well as acrylic paint. Each piece is a world unto itself, a world where the viewer finds himself immersed in pattern, design, and delight.
