Located near Santa Fe, the Institute of American Indian Arts is a multi-tribal center of higher education dedicated to the preservation, study, creative application, and contemporary expression of American Indian and Alaska Native arts and cultures.
IAIA is a federally chartered institution that provides higher education in Native American arts and cultures through fully accredited associate’s and bachelor’s degree programs. IAIA’s greatest strength lies in its multi-tribal student body, which represents over 140 tribes. Each student brings to campus a distinct tribal history and culture, thereby enriching programs and activities for everyone involved at IAIA and the surrounding community.
In addition to its excellent educational programs, beautiful 140 acre campus, superior faculty and diverse student body, IAIA also owns and operates its own IAIA Museum (http://www.iaia.edu/museum/index.php). In 1991, Congress transferred to the Institute a Federal building, constructed in the Pueblo Revival style and listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The IAIA Museum (http://www.iaia.edu/museum/index.php) relocated to its new home in downtown Santa Fe, one block from the historic Santa Fe Plaza and the Palace of the Governors shortly thereafter. The Museum’s collection has since grown to contain more than 7,000 works of art and has been referred to as the “National Collection of Contemporary Native American Art.”
