Penney Catalog store in Deming. “It’s more convenient for them than to be in traffic.

To many people the inconspicuous Penney’s catalog merchant in the small towns of New Mexico, like Jesus and Anna Delgado’s, are lifelines for their children’s wardrobes, for renovating their homes, or at this time of year, for holiday gift-giving.

Clients can order from catalogs, but “it’s a little bit cheaper and a little bit faster to come to the catalog desk,” says Anna. “We have a computer for on-line ordering,” she says. “People can also come in here and ask for a credit application.”

“We have lots of sales going on all the time,” she says, “and often we have free shipping.” Right now there’s free shipping for Christmas catalog items for orders of $49 or more. All regularly- priced merchandise is now 30% off, and sale items will be 10% off.” The deadline for ordering holiday presents at the catalog merchants is December 16. They also have a line of gift cards available, from $10 to $100.

There is an absolutely phenomenal variety of things to be purchased from the catalogs of Penney’s, the largest general merchandise catalog business in the U.S.

Besides lots of functional items like jeans, athletic socks, bathrobes, and furniture for every room in the house, you can also order an all-in-one pedicure/foot spa, a grandfather clock, a cuckoo clock, very elegant and decorative fireplace screens, a Kilim rug, a Byzantine bracelet, a diamond ring, curtains from over a hundred catalog pages (Penney’s does made-to-order window coverings), or a portable, inflatable whirlpool spa.

There are also loads of things to buy for kids: a dirt bike, a 3-foot tall Butterscotch Pony, a painting easel, a dollhouse with an elevator, NFL clothing, a gumball machine, a newborn baby doll, a Giga ball, a boxing buddy, a shark-shaped electric guitar, or a tabletop air hockey game.

There are over 900 pages in the general catalog, and at the catalog store there are about 15 smaller catalogs specializing in clothes for men or women, cooking utensils, plus-size clothes, post-mastectomy items, wedding registry items, and so forth.

The Penney’s in Deming is at 507 S. Gold St. and is open 9:00-5:30 Mon-Fri. Call 546-8326.
