Annual tour of art, plaza area businesses
gives shoppers great opportunities for holiday shopping

Socorro, NM – Luminarias lit the way to great gifts, camaraderie and a holiday evening of food and music during the fourth annual Luminarias on the Plaza and Beyond Art Stroll on Friday, Dec. 7 from 5-8:30 pm.

Shops and businesses in and around the plaza hosted artists for the one-evening only exhibit and sale.

Businesses around the plaza and beyond include:

Sundance Gifts, who has seen a phenomenal year of expansion. MiRan Brown’s extensive inventory includes many local artists, potters and jewelers as well as hand-crafted Mexican and South American objects.

Socorro Office Supply, where along with a goodly assortment of office and computer supplies, you’ll find Saga Cards, southwest cook books, novels and poetry. Blake and Sonja in the past have hosted Alfred Blaszcak, and Leon Miler, who was featured artist at the recent Festival of the Cranes, among others.

Socorro Insurance Mart hosts two or three artists in their spacious office; and down Manzanares, Gambles usually hosts wildlife artists Burt Calkins.

Be sure to stop in at Manzanares Street Coffeehouse to see their changing art displays.

At the park just north of the Plaza, the City of Socorro’s tree lighting will bring choral groups to lead carols and seasonal songs. Continue north to the newly opened Stage Door Grill, which has hung several works by Fullingim-Isenhour-Leard Gallery artists Natasha Isenhour and Margi Lucena. Be sure to stop in their gallery during the art stroll. Skeeter Leard will have her original Saga card creations; other cards and gift items also will be available.

The Luminaria Arts Crawl is sure to include many of the artists who participated in the recent Festival of the Cranes Studio Tour and in the ongoing Socorro County Arts Show at NM Tech’s Macey Center. The Socorro County Arts Gallery is located one & a half blocks south of the plaza.

The Festival Studio Tour, a first for Socorro County, took art lovers through the city, down the valley and out along Hwy 380 for some lovely landscapes along the way and in the various studios. At the Macey Center show, meanwhile, four artists sold a total of five pieces during the Festival of the Cranes, an encouraging start to the holiday season. The show, which hangs through Dec. 17, is a good representation of well established artists and new, emerging talent. The show was delightfully hung in Macey Center’s huge gallery. Georgia Raymond coordinates the annual show and said she is grateful to Georgette Grey and Pat Basham for their help in hanging the exhibit. The upstairs gallery is open during regular business hours and during special events.
