Socorro, NM – The Socorro First Baptist Church has for decades provided a visual reminder of the Christmas story with the manger scene at the church’s front door. Now, thanks to the vision of one member, they are making the entire Christmas story “interactive”.

The parking lot at the corner of Spring and California Streets for the second year on Dec. 14 and 15 will be converted into a drive-thru set with eight stations depicting the scenes that Christians hold sacred: From the prophecy by Isaiah, to the Annunciation, the shepherds, the census called by Caesar Augustus, the Village of Bethlehem and its crowded inns, the Wise Men and the Manger. The last scene depicts the cross and the empty tomb, “reminding us that we worship a Living Savior,” said Joan Rogers, a volunteer and member of First Baptist Church.

“There was so much talent displayed in this all-volunteer venture,” she noted in a letter after last year’s inaugural play. From panels and construction of the scenes, to organizing people and live animals, their hay and corrals, to the costumes for all the actors ą and the kitchen crew that served over 200 cups of hot chocolate to the freezing crew, the effort was worth it, she reported.

Rogers attributes the vision behind the drive-thru Christmas story to Jenny Farmer “who had the dream and allowed us to go with her.”

You may drive through the Bethlehem scene from 6-8 pm on Friday, Dec. 14 and from 4-7 pm on Saturday, Dec. 15.
