Alto, NM – Spencer Theater’s Winter Season continues in December with award winning musicals Evita and Christmas favorite The Nutcracker. Enjoy these great performances in an award-winning venue. Season tickets are available through the Spencer Theater Box Office located at the theater on Airport Highway 220. The Blockbuster “Evita” winner of seven Tony Awards, on Thursday, Dec.13th at 8 p.m. ($49 & $46). Presented by Columbia Artists Theatricals with 30 singers, dancers and orchestra musicians, this compelling and captivating mega-musical is about one woman’s love affair with her nation. (Tickets are currently wait-list only).

Then it’s every child’s favorite Christmas fantasy, “The Nutcracker” on Thursday, December 20th and Friday, December 21st at 7 p.m. ($25) Featuring lavish sets and costumes, the production stars the outstanding dancers of the Ruidoso Dance Ensemble and the professional principal dancer Norbert Nierewicz.

In January:

On Thursday, Jan. 31st at 8 p.m. the spotlights shine on the big and brassy Broadway hit “Gypsy” ($49 & $46). This hilarious and unforgettable musical about the famed striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee stars 30 singers, dancers and orchestra musicians with the nationally touring company Phoenix Entertainment of New York.

In February:

“The Wonderful Wizard of Song” with the Three Crooners and their orchestra on Saturday, Feb. 9th at 8 p.m. ($49 & $46). This multimedia extravaganza features the great tunes of composer Harold Arlen in hits from the Cotton Club to the Yellow Brick Road. The repertoire is sung by The Three Crooners of Vegas, with an accompanying orchestra. Arlen’s son Sam will narrate the evening and special never-before-seen footage from the Wizard of Oz will be shown, too!

William Shakespeare ‘s “The Tempest” on Wednesday, Feb. 20th at 8 p.m. ($39 & $36). The equity actors of The Acting Company, a Tony Award and Obie winning drama troupe, will perform this poignant tale of love, tragedy and forgiveness.

In March:

The action kicks off with the hot vocalists The Ten Tenors on Tuesday, March 4th at 8 p.m. ($49 & $46). This troupe of 10 Australian tenors deliver a dynamic mix of vocal power ą from high tone opera, to jazz, modern rock and stylized pop ą with a stylized flair that leaves audiences breathless!

On Thursday, March 6th at 8 p.m. the Spencer presents the high-flying Broadway musical that thrills children and adults alike ą “Peter Pan!” ($49 & $46). Presented by the nationally touring company of The High Flying, LLC, represented by Gurtman and Murtha Artists of New York, this thrilling musical adventure will feature flying, singing and dancing with a cast of 30.

The following week the spotlights shine on fiddling sensation Eileen Ivers and her band on Friday, March 14th at 8 p.m. ($39 & $36). Called a “sensation” by Billboard Magazine and “the Jimi Hendrix of the violin” by The New York Times, Ivers is a contemporary fiddler and composer who explores Celtic fiddling traditions, while also adding the progressive rhythms of Afro-Caribbean, rock, blues and bluegrass to the musical palette. Her concert is St. Patrick’s Day Weekend.

“Little Women, The Broadway Musical” fills the hall with glorious music and a timeless tale on Thursday, March 20th ($39 & $36) and Friday, March 21st at 8 p.m. ($46 & $43). The beloved coming of age story, drawn from the writings of Louisa May Alcott, takes place during the Civil War era and embodies the complete theatrical experience. Called “Astonishing!” by New York Magazine, the performances kick off Easter Weekend.

The month closes out with the cutting-edge leader in contemporary American dance ą Parsons Dance Company on Saturday, March 29th at 8 p.m. ($39 & $36). Performing riveting theatrical abstracts of social and universal themes, the world famous Parson Dance shines with a sensual exuberance.

Spencer Theater is a world-class performance hall located in the Sacramento Mountain settlement of Alto, about 12 miles north of downtown Ruidoso. Unique architecture, outstanding acoustics, intimate seating, and excellent artistry are the Spencer’s celebrated features. The elegant hall seats 514, with no seats farther than 67 feet from the 4,770 square-foot stage. The Spencer also has a 964 square-foot outdoor stage that can seat 1,500. From its Spanish mica-flecked limestone face to the crystal lobby, the building itself is a work of art. Free public tours are offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the year.
