White Sands International Film Festival this year is paying tribute to Latino filmmakers. Special guest Arturo Ripstein will be honored with a Life Time Achievement Award by WSIFF for his phenomenal contributions to film. Widely considered Mexico’s most celebrated and respected filmmakers, Ripstein has been called “a legend in his own right.” A student under Luis Bruñuel, Ripstein’s films explore l’amour fou and claustrophobia. His films have been enthusiastically received outside Mexico and he has won awards at the Venice Film Festival and Sundance Festival. In 1997, Ripstein was awarded the National Prize for the Arts in Mexico, the only filmmaker besides Buñuel to receive that honor.

Ripstein’s wife and film collaborator, Paz Alicia Garcia-Diego, a brilliant screenwriter who has won numerous awards, will lead a screenwriting panel.

Other special guests include Aleandro Monteverde, director of Bella, who won this year’s prestigious People’s Choice Award at Toronto and was awarded the Smithsonian Latin Legacy Award. Monteverde will lead a question and answer session after the screening of his film “Bella” on Wednesday.

Another special guest is David Flynn. A Hollywood producer and directors' agent for UTA, Flynn represents directors such as the Cohen Brothers and Steven Soderbergh. Flynn produced "Seraphim Falls," which will be screened at the festival; he will lead a roundtable discussion on Friday afternoon.

Casting directors Carmen Martinez and Angelique Midthunder, of New Mexico, and Donn Finn, Los Angeles, will lead panels and workshops for actors. Along with workshops and panel discussions, there will be lots of chances to query and interact with film business professionals. The list of events, seminars and workshops is impressive too. This year’s festival will include a “Made In New Mexico” day plus a film competition and workshop aimed at High School Students. Also included are seminars on Screenwriting, Pitching Your Film to an Investor, Auditioning, Film Editing using Final Cut, a and several more. There will also be lots of chance to network.

Of course there’ll be films too. Six fine films are being featured in this year’s festival including “Trail Street”, 'Bella', 'La Reina De La Noche', 'Around the Bend', 'Seraphim Falls' and 'The Orphanage'. ‘Around the Bend’ and ‘Seraphim Falls’ were both filmed in New Mexico.

This year film screenings will be shown at the new Aviator 10 Theatre Complex, 3651 Mesa Village Dr. just off the 54/70 by-pass in Alamogordo. The new facility offers stadium seating and digital projection to enhance the audience’s viewing experience."

Anyone can attend the festival to learn, network or just to enjoy the quality films that will be shown. For more information about WSIFF, call 1-877-345-6973 or visit www.wsiff.com (http://www.wsiff.com/)
