Socorro – The South rises again. And each year, it’s great fun for participants and viewers alike. This year’s battles take place Feb. 29 through March 2.
Civil War reenactors enjoy recreating the events leading up and and surrounding the Battles for Socorro and the time and setting are grand for the adventure: Crisp February days at the Escondida are perfect weather for those warm, scratchy wool uniforms they wore back in the good ol’ days.
The Union and the Confederates will set up camp near the river and there will be plenty of opportunities for watching living history, the battles and competition during the events.
Camps set up beginning at 1 pm on Friday, Feb. 29 at Escondida Bridge. By 4 pm, the action will move into Socorro where the Siege of Socorro will be reeacted from Clark Field, up the railroad tracks to California Street and the plaza. The in-town battle is unique in US history.
The rest of the weekend takes place at Escondida with living history, reenactments, competition and a fandango Saturday evening. Provided below is the full schedule for weekend events:
