Deming NM: In our October – November ’07 edition we ran a story about the November 1st opening of a new Deming gallery named “Studios Del Sol”. At least that’s what we assumed the name would be at the time because the gallery owners were already operating a popular art business in Columbus under that name. But as it turned out when the new gallery opened, the owners had decided to call it “Art in the Alley Gallery and Studio” instead.

The new Gallery and Studio offers oil, acrylic and water color paintings plus art-quality photography, vintage clothing, handmade cards, art lessons, classes, workshops and seminars to students and art lovers from the Deming area.

Oh, how appropriate that name is… for “Art in the Alley” is literally tucked away in the middle of an alley that runs between Silver Street to the east and Gold Street to the west and Spruce on the north or Hemlock on the south. In short, this unique hideaway gallery has no street frontage at all. The closest you can come to finding it on any street in Deming is to find the law office of Attorney Rick Sherman at 208 South Silver and park somewhere nearby. You’ll need to wander down that alley beside 208 Silver to find this delightful new art venue.

Today, Deming’s newest gallery features a variety of visual artists including semi-retired Costa Rican resident and 40 year professional artist Ann Sammis – a lifelong artist who has been featured in galleries and shows in New York, Chicago, Provincetown, and Bisbee, Arizona plus Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and Patzcuaro, Michoacan south of the border too. We understand Sammis once lived in Rodeo, NM where she owned and operated a gallery of her own.

Art in the Alley is the creative brain child of two professional New Mexico artists… Collage and Mixed Media artist Barbara Agte and Painter, Art Teacher, Tutor and Mentor Tim McAndrews. The pair are partners in this eclectic artistic venture.

In addition to the art of Ann Sammis, Agte and McAndrews, Art in the Alley Gallery and Studio also features color works by Petroglyph Photographer Helena Myers, black and white photos by Santa Fe photographer Thomas Vorce and the art of deceased New Mexico artist Edward Sammis as well. McAndrews uses the gallery as a living art classroom and offers classes, seminars, workshops and private instruction to Deming art students.

So, next time you're in Deming, make it a point to drop by and visit Art in the Alley Gallery and Studio. But whatever you do, don't tell your mom. She'd never understand why you're hanging out with artists in Deming's downtown alleys.

You'll find Art in the Alley hidden in the alley between Silver and Gold Streets on the east and west and Spruce and Hemlock on the north and south. Or look for the law office of Rick Sherman at 208 South Silver and wander down the alley next door. The new gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday 12 - 7 pm or call 575-544-4249 or 575-531-2440 to arrange a private showing.

Please be sure to tell them you found them in Steppin' Out and give them our very best.

Have fun!
