Madrid, NM – The renovations and changes are almost completed at Johnsons of Madrid Galleries of Fine and Fiber Art. The gallery has showcased Mel Johnsons’s paintings and Diana Johnsons’s fiber art along with hundreds of other artists in all medians for decades. Now they have added new rooms for gallery space – and new performance and exhibition space as well. Meanwhile, if you missed seeing the current exhibition of Mel Johnson's work, don’t worry. The solo show continues through April.

For the christening, Nacha Mendez will perform. Nacha sings, plays guitar, tres and oud and promises an afternoon of exciting Latin World Music from 1-3 pm. Admission is a suggested donation of $10.
Nacha Mendez was born in Chicago, raised in the tiny border town of La Union, New Mexico and spent years in New York City. Now she is settled back in the Santa Fe area. Her musical history is just as varied: she grew up singing Mexican rancheras, played in alternative rock bands, made dance records for the club crowd, and sang in composer Robert Ashley’s avant-garde operas. Finally it was time to forge her own sound.
Nacha’s music is an expression of her curiosity, her varied experience and restless passion for living. It refuses to fit neatly into any one genre, fearlessly drawing on a wide range of influences to expand the definition of Latin music.
After the performance, the traditional first Saturday reception will be held from 3-5 pm.

The show covers the now six gallery exhibition rooms of the building. A CD of photos of historic Madrid mining days is available for viewing throughout Mel’s show which ends April 29.
Also showing is “Wearables and Wallables” (all media), a exhibit of works by new fiber artists and most of the fiber folks which have shown in the past in Diana Johnson's studio at the gallery.
Then, in May, enjoy Chamber music from 1-3 on May 3, first Saturday, followed
by a reception, 3-5 pm, for the May and June exhibition of works in all media by the 150 artists represented by Johnsons of Madrid.
