Historic Hillsboro Plans Home Tours and Music Fest
to Raise Funds for Library and Historic Preservation

Hillsboro, NM – Come up to Hillsboro on Saturday, May 17 and enjoy a day of history, art, beauty and music in this Black Range village. The 2nd annual Hillsboro Heritage Day features the popular Music Festival and a home and garden tour. Both events will benefit Hillsboro’s continuing historic preservation efforts and its library.<br><br><img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/Hillsboro_HS_courtyard.jpg align=right border=1 vspace=5 hspace=5 alt="Proceeds will help the Community Center and Library">Hillsboro is located 17 miles west of I-25 via Hwy 152 on the east slope of the Black Range— and about 40 miles east of Silver City on a beautiful drive through the Black Range. The Town began in 1877 when two prospectors found gold and silver in the foothills. Many of the original buildings still survive and are being renovated as private homes, businesses and community centers.<br><br>“A Gift to the Street” Tour will showcase five homes and two gardens, each contributing to the “Streetscape” that makes Hillsboro one of Southern New Mexico’s most unique and historic small towns. The homes demonstrate restored, rehabilitated or unique styles and the gardens illustrate formal, informal, private and public styles.<br><br>From 10 am to 2 pm, visitors may walk or drive along Hillsboro streets for the tour. Signs will be posted at each location. Tickets are $10; children under 12 are free.<br><br>For tickets or home tour information, call Patty Woodruff 575-895-5385.<br><br>Then, soak up the sounds of folk, bluegrass and western music during the Heritage Music Festival at the Hillsboro Community Center on Elenora Street. Regional bands offering a diversity of traditional music styles will play from 2 pm to 10 pm:
2 p.m. Electric Campfire Orchestra (Acoustic eclectic swing oldies)
3 p.m. The Deming Fusiliers (Appalachian string band)
4 p.m. The Sabinal Sisters (Variety western swing & soft folksy ballads)
5 p.m. Holy Water & Whisky Band
6 p.m. Mackie Redd (Local singer-songwriter with Nashville roots)
7 p.m. The Ronstadt Cousins, with Peter McLaughlin (Flattop champion) and Chris Brasear (Heritage mining ballads & bluegrass)
8 – 10 p.m. The Adobe Brothers (High-energy danceable bluegrass)
Tickets are $5 per performance or $20 Day Pass. Children under 12 are free.

Proceeds from the 2008 Hillsboro Heritage Day will contribute to the purchase of the historic site of Hillsboro’s stately brick courthouse and stone jail, built in 1892 and to the all-volunteer-operated: historic Hillsboro Community Center and Hillsboro Community Library.
