Truth or Consequences, New Mexico – An exhibit of new work by Albuquerque artist David Koch entitled “Mood Swings and Mixed Metaphors” continues at the Downtown Gallery “M” through April 27. The gallery will be open during the monthly Art Hop on Saturday, April 12 from 6-9 pm.
Since 2003 David Koch has been making acrylic paintings using images taken from a variety of sources, and removed from their original context. The images are chosen for their ability to communicate thoughts and ideas he has about living in this place, at this time in history. The recent work exploits three areas of interest: image as metaphor, color as subject matter, and a blurring of the line between private and public experiences.
His work is based on an aesthetic of collage and reflects the “cut and paste” nature of contemporary life, making sure that the images maintain their appearance and association with the real world with every loving brushstroke.
Born in El Dorado, Arkansas. David Koch’s family moved to Bossier City, Louisiana where he had what he describes as “an exceptionally average suburban upbringing.“ After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in studio from Louisiana Tech in 1982, Koch caught the first ride out of town and ended up in Albuquerque, NM. His first exhibition of paintings in New Mexico was at Highland University, in Las Vegas, in 1984 and exhibited his work at CAFE Contemporary Art from 1992-1995. In 1998, Koch was invited to participate in a three-man show at the A to Z Gallery in Zurich, Switzerland, but primarily he exhibits his work in Albuquerque and Santa;. He currently maintains a studio at his North Valley home; this is his first show in Truth or Consequences, NM.
