Smokey Bear Days is set for May 2 and 3 this year.

The cub was discovered in the Capitan Mountains after a treacherous forest fire destroyed 17,000 acres there killing the cub’s mother. The baby bear found clinging to a burning tree, scorched and wounded, was taken to the home of a caring fire-fighter and called “Hot-Foot Teddy” before receiving his lasting name of Smokey Bear. He became the Forest Service’s Fire Prevention Icon after numerous animated animal characters, including Bambi had been tried.

The Chamber of Commerce, Capitan Women’s Club, Lion’s Club and Smokey Bear Memorial Park pull together to create two fun-filled days with something for everyone, May 2 and 3. Begun about <img src=http://sonewmex.com/images/smokey_bear.jpg align=right border=1 vspace=1 hspace=5 alt="Bring the kids and let them shake Smokey's hand!.">four years ago by the Village of Capitan, the main message is fire prevention, vital for the forests and brush-lands in this area.

There will be an amateur BBQ contest; Karaoke Friday night; Saturday night dance; marvelous demonstrations including some by snake, and insect handlers. A representative from the Alamogordo Zoo will be there, too. Wildlife educational material and demonstrations will be provided by the Department of Fish and Game. There will be a parade May 3.
