Reflections of the Rio Abajo at UNM-VC

Los Lunas – A photography and writings exhibit that has been in the works for seven years will be on display at the UNM-Valencia Campus in April. The husband-wife team of Charlie and Irene Sanchez has been working on their “Reflections of the Rio Abajo” exhibit since 2001.

He has taken more than 400 photographs to date, about 25- 30 of the photographs will be on display at the UNM-Valencia Fine Arts Gallery April 2-16. Irene, will be providing written reflections on the sites and buildings in the photographs. Her writings reflect her feeling on these sites; many are poems or short essays. Irene is a well known local author who has a cookbook, Comida Sobrosa: Home-Style Southwestern Cooking, published by UNM Press.

Las Mujeres del Mariachi concert to benefit Literacy

Los Lunas - Las Mujeres del Mariachi (The Women of Mariachi) is set for Saturday, May 10 at Los Lunas High School Auditorium; doors open at 6 pm. The show will honor women on Mexico’s national Mother’s Day and will feature Valencia County natives and national attractions.

The concert is a benefit for a great cause: The Valencia County Literacy Council which provides tutoring for adults and preschoolers, GED services and special reading programs.

Produced by Pedro Rael, the show features Lydia Solano, a former Valencia County resident who has played with such Mariachi greats as Antonio Aguilar, Lola Beltrain, LuchaVilla and Eddie Valdez (La Bamba). Singing with Lydia will be Mayela Alejandra, a senior a Los Lunas High school, and Sandra Montoya, a professional performer who has lived in Valencia for the past 13 years. The trio will be backed by Mariachi Tenampa, a regional favorite. They also will sing with Mayela’s father, Arnoldo Arrieta, and TomÄ native Romano Enrique, back from Spain for a special guest appearance.

Also on the night’s program is the Baila Baila Dance Academy led by Israela Garcia. The group has performed at Carnegie Hall, in England, Hawaii and Guadalajara and won national awards in the United States.

Tickets for the event range from $20 to $12 and can be purchased by calling 227-6986. The Valencia County Literacy Council provides volunteer tutoring for adults who need to learn to read and to speak English. VCLC also provides a Preschool in the El Cerro Mission area of Valencia County for the children of English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED en Español students and runs BOOK Readers.

Los Lunas- Schools present Arts and Literacy Fiesta

Los Lunas – The annual Los Lunas Schools “District Arts and Literacy Fiesta” showcases outstanding student work, community involvement, and nationally recognized artists. This year’s event, 4:30 to 6:30 pm April 16 at the Los Lunas Middle School Courtyard features Mike McCartney as the legendary story-toting “Indiana Bones” who digs up fantastic adventures in storytelling.

The Fiesta artists include Eddie Ramirez, Brent Jeffrey Thomas, Lena Mu¢oz. Terry Duncan, and Alberta Jonikas. Further entertainment will be provided by the fabulous Retro band with a variety of music, and Los Lunas High Schools’ New Mexico Junior Miss, Mayela Arrieta.
